PE2 Goals and PE1 reflection

My PE1 goals were:

  • Practice commonly used phrases with my girlfriend who is also a Japanese student.
  • Do shadowing.
  • Practice the 'r' sounds from Japanese.
  • Watch episodes from Samurai Champloo with English subtitles.
I feel I accomplished these goals but could have done better. I have practiced with my girlfriend quite a lot. She has already completed first-year Japanese and has helped me with my vocabulary. The shadowing was much more useful than I though it would be, and I look forward to continuing it. I have only watched one episode of Samurai Champloo, but I have practiced my 'r/l' sounds while commuting in from Philadelphia.

My PE2 goals are:
  • Continue to practice phrases at home.
  • Do more shadowing.
  • Watch episodes from Samurai Champloo with English subtitles.
  • Focus on catching spoken phrases and words that I already know. I find it frustrating when I hear a sentence in class or in the textbook audio that I know when written but don't recognize when spoken.

I will also do shadowing to work on pronunciation of sounds different from english such as in and to improve my prosody. To help acclimate myself to the language and pronunciation, I will watch episodes from Samurai Champloo in Japanese with English subtitles.

Why Japanese?

I am studying Japanese because I am intrigued by the culture both because of its differences from western culture and because of its similarities. I have spent my entire life living in America and Europe and thus have no direct experience with Asian cultures in general. The close relationship Japan has had with the United States during the later part of the last century makes it seem more accessible than other Asian cultures. More than this, though, is the affinity I feel for Japan because of its stark differences from western cultures. The intense attention to detail and thoughtfulness of Japanese culture resonates with my personality.
